Prestigious institutions in Canada provide over 200 scholarship opportunities tailored exclusively for foreign students. These scholarships typically come with a $2500 monthly stipend, but they may also cover living fees, health insurance, tuition, and a travel allowance. We’ll be mentioning a few of these opportunities in this post.

University of Waterloo 

The University of Waterloo is offering fully funded scholarship opportunities for international students. This scholarship opportunity is offered for Undergraduate, Master, and Ph.D. studies. The scholarship is valued at up to $10,000.

1. International Master’s Award of Excellence (IMAE)

Award Description: 

Effective May 1, 2019 (spring 2019 admissions cycle), the International Master’s Award of Excellence, valued at $2,500 per term for a maximum of five full-time terms within the allowable program time limits (6 terms), will be awarded to eligible international master’s students normally entering a research-based graduate program at the University of Waterloo. Faculties will nominate eligible students based on the Faculty’s award allocation. Students will be selected based on academic excellence as demonstrated through their application for admission to the graduate program.

Value Description: 

Award valued at $2,500 per term for a maximum of five terms.

Eligibility & Selection Criteria: 

  • International students who are registered full-time and assessed international tuition fees. 
  • Normally given to students in research-based programs (thesis or major research paper). 
  • Will normally only be given to students entering the first term of their program (term 1.0).
  • Students must demonstrate academic excellence through criteria established by the Faculty.
  • Students must meet the academic progress requirements of their program and not have outstanding probationary admission requirements. 
  • This award could be in addition to other internal or external scholarships (e.g., UW Graduate Scholarship, OGS,  etc). Note: scholarships are different than sponsorships – see next bullet.
  • Normally, students should not be concurrently receiving foreign government or agency sponsorship (e.g., China Scholarship Council, Libyan sponsorship, etc) or be fully or partially self-funded more than the Faculty minimum levels of support.  
  • Students’ grandparents under the existing IMSA program cannot be nominated for an IMAE; however, a student previously awarded an IMSA for a previously completed master’s degree can be nominated for an IMAE.
  • Students will be automatically considered for this award based on their application for admission. Departments and/or Faculty will define their own internal process by which they select recipients based on the eligibility criteria and allocation.
  • Faculties may impose stricter eligibility criteria as appropriate.

2. David Johnston – Lebovic Foundation International Experience Awards

Award Type: 

International experience awards

Award Description: 

Several awards are provided annually to full-time undergraduate and graduate students in any Faculty who participate in an international experience in Israel, including a minimally paid or volunteer co-op work placement, a volunteer placement, or a study term related to academic requirements. Awards are valued at up to $2,500 – $10,000 each and will be given on the basis of academic achievement, as well as the type and duration of the experience. Interested students, in good academic standing (normally a minimum 70% average at the undergraduate level; normally a minimum 75% average at the graduate level), who are planning to participate in an international experience in Israel are eligible to apply. Award selection will take place once per term. Students should apply as soon as they are able to confirm the details of their intended experience by one of the following deadlines: July 15, November 15, or March 15. These awards were established through the generous support of the Joseph and Wolf Lebovic Foundation in honour of former Waterloo President David Johnston, as a lasting tribute to his 11-year service to this university and in recognition of his passion for international opportunities for students.

  • $2,500 to $5,000 for a one-term work or volunteer experience
  • Up to $10,000 for a two-term work or volunteer experience

UdeM Exemption Scholarship for International Students

The Université de Montréal introduces a new scholarship opportunity for exemption from additional tuition fees for international students that want to study in Canada.

The UdeM exemption scholarship program is designed to support international candidates in their university studies. Starting in the fall of 2020, they could benefit from an exemption from the tuition fees normally charged to international students. The granting of scholarships continues for winter 2023, summer 2023, fall 2023, and winter 2024 sessions.

The goal of this new program is to help the best talent from around the world attend one of the finest francophone research universities in the world. In turn, these international students will help fulfill our educational mission by enriching the cultural diversity of the Université de Montréal community.

Value Description

Undergraduate Programs

The excellence of your academic record is the only evaluation criterion to determine the value of the scholarship. This assessment is made based on the transcripts provided during the admission application. The results of the analysis are classified into the following three levels.

  • Level A: $13,340.40 per year (2 sessions, equivalent to 30 credits) or $6,670.20 per session (15 credits) or $444.68 per credit
  • Level B: $6,357.60 per year (2 sessions, equivalent to 30 credits) or $3,178.80 per session (15 credits) or $211.92 per credit
  • Level C: $2,223.90 per year (2 sessions, equivalent to 30 credits) or $1,111.95 per session (15 credits) or $7.13 per credit

Students enrolled in a certificate, major, minor, short program, and preparatory year program for university studies automatically obtain the level C award.

These amounts are applied to tuition fees of $27,101.70 per year (30 credits)*.

Graduate Programs – Masters

To support you in your graduate studies as an international student, a partial exemption scholarship from the additional tuition fees normally charged to international students is available.

  • Non-research: $10,474.65 per year (3 sessions, equivalent to 45 credits) or $3,491.55 per session (equivalent to 15 credits) or $232.77 per credit

This amount is applied to tuition fees of $30,829.50 per year (45 credits)*.

  • Research: $10,347.75 per year (3 sessions, equivalent to 45 credits) or $3,449.25 per session (equivalent to 15 credits) or $229.95 per credit

This amount is applied to tuition fees of $29,592 per year (45 credits)*.

For the writing and correction sessions, the same tuition fees as those charged to Québec students will be applied.

Graduate Programs – PhD

To support you in your graduate studies as an international student, a complete waiver of the additional tuition fees normally charged to international students is available.

This exemption bursary allows you to benefit from the same tuition fees as Québec graduate studies students.

  • $22,241.25 per year (3 sessions, equivalent to 45 credits) or $7,413.75 per session (equivalent to 15 credits) or $494.25 per credit

This amount is applied to the tuition fees of $26,562.60 per year (45 credits)*.

For the writing and correction sessions, the same tuition fees as those charged to Québec students will be applied.

Eligibility & Selection Criteria: 

This scholarship program for exemption from additional tuition fees is intended for international students (except French and French-speaking Belgian students). To be eligible, the candidate must:

  • have received an offer of admission to a study program at UdeM as of Fall 2020
  • have valid study authorizations (CAQ and study permit) for all sessions of their study program. For more information, please see their web page on administrative and immigration procedures
  • be continuously enrolled full-time (unless an absence is approved) for their entire study program
  • not benefit from another form of tuition fee exemption
  • not enrolled in an independent study program

If one of the above conditions is not met, the UdeM exemption scholarship may be withdrawn.

How can I receive this scholarship?

1. Apply for admission

Before completing the application form, make sure you respect the application deadlines and check the admissions requirements for the study programs of your interest.

2. Follow up on your file and receive an offer of admission

A few days after submitting your admissions application, you will receive your access codes for the “Student Centre.” This is the platform where you can monitor your application and receive your offer of acceptance letter.

3. Accept the offer of admission to start the evaluation.

You don’t have to apply for a UdeM Exemption Scholarship. New candidates’ files will be evaluated to determine their eligibility and the amount of their exemption scholarship.

4. Receive the notice of award with the amount

After receiving your admissions offer, the Université de Montréal will promptly inform you, by email, of the amount of the scholarship to which you are entitled. Print and keep this document in a safe place. It will be useful for future reference.
